The Blame Game

In this article, Congressman Foley's attorney said he was abused as a teen and acknowledges that former lawmaker is gay. His atty continues to say that the Florida Republican had been molested by a clergyman as a teenager and that he was under the influence of alcohol when he sent lurid messages to congressional pages. "Mark was the under the influence of alcohol at the time he sent the alleged e-mails and IMs that I have been informed of".
-------
So I guess if you are a drunk, molested as a teenager, and you are gay, it is ok to send sexual messages to teens that look up to you. Common, give me a break! The irony is that such powerful people automatically run and hide rather than stand up like a man and face the consequences. At least he can preserve some dignity if he just stops giving excuses.

Imagine a world where a murderer said he can't help it because he was beaten as a child, a child molester said he does it because he was once molested, or a wife beater said he was beaten by his father when he was young. The problem with taking these factors into consideration is that there is no justice.

Turns out that some of those IMs were sent while he was on the floor of Congress. Who does he think he was--Teddy Kennedy?

I'm reminded of the rabbinical teaching that what you do when you're drunk reveals what you really are inside when your inhibitions are down. Sorry, but "I was drunk" doesn't excuse Mel Gibson, and it doesn't excuse Mark Foley, either.
