Sex & the City

So I went on a blind date and this girl (a believer) said her fav show is S&TC. I have never seen it but the name implies a lot already. However, to be fair and keep an open mind, I was surfing channels and came across it so I tuned into it. I tuned it out after 5 min as it was the most vile show I've watched on TV. My question is am I out of touch with reality, too strict, and legalistic, or are we dumbing down the gospel that we can find such shows entertaining?

Suffering?

My pastor preached on suffering this past Sun and that how we will suffer persecution for Christ sake. So what exactly does that mean for us living here in the U.S.? I mean it's not like we are being made fun of or dragged through the streets for our belief. In fact, there's a T-shirt that some Hollywood stars are wearing like "Jesus is my home boy".

$$$ = Love?

Here's an excerpt from a very interesting article:
According to a new "American Weddings" study conducted by The Fairchild Bridal Group, the average couple walks down the aisle dragging a $26,327 price tag. To put things in perspective, the U.S. wedding industry generated $125 billion in 2005, about the same amount as Ireland's GDP.

Here's an article that my friend, Pete, wrote. I told him this is his big break and that he'll forget about me when he makes his millions.

Only on TV?

I thought this only happens on TV like The Office but I was wrong. I conducted an interview yesterday and the guy showed up in a golf shirt and shorts. This was fine if the position was for a lifeguard but it's a programming job. If my boss wasn't there, I would have told the guy to turn around. After looking over the resume,

I said Tell me about yourself.
He was lost, You mean my life?
I rephrased, Some of the projects you have done @ school.
He failed on all simple technical concepts so I decided to ask general questions.
Me, What's your dream job?
Him, Hugh Heffner, ha ha but I was not even amused.
Then he said, To be rich and I gave him the you gotta be kidding me look. I did not say anything for 5 seconds on purpose so that he can dig himself out of the hole but he didn't.
Then I said, How are you going to get there?
He said, Well, whatever position I can get.
My thoughts to myself, This is a waste of time.
Me to him, Thank you for coming. I have your resume.

Hope You Dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances
But they're worth taking
Lovin' might be a mistake
But it's worth making
Don't let some hell bent heart
Leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out
Reconsider
Give the heavens above
More than just a passing glance.

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I heard this song while watching Cold Case and while this song is about love, we can substitute "love" with our life and faith.

TGIF!

Thank God it's Friday, well by the time most of you read this it will be. It's another good Friday as I found out that my friend Luke is out of the hospital. No more surgeries, ICUs, blood clots, infection, etc. He still has a long way to recover as far as rehab goes but he's out of the hospital. God is indeed gracious and merciful.

The Poor

20 something high school kids from our church just came back from their mission trip to Acapulco. They were doing construction work for a shelter for street kids. The kids ages range from 10-16 and all of them were very nice and lovable. Unfortunately, some of these street kids sell their bodies for prostitution so they can use the money for their drug addiction.

One part of me says it's very sad and we can help by going down their to expand the shelter, send $, etc. The other part of me says what on earth were these adults doing by taking advantage of children so they can have a few immediate sinful pleasures. I was quite angry but then I thought that the Gospel is not only for the children but for the adults for they do not know better. What can we do to spread the good news?

Casual What?

So I started a new job this Mon and had to wear pants and button up shirt. What the heck is that? This is a lot diff from T's and shorts. I guess I'll get used to it, heck I'd even dress up in a clown suit for this new pay.

Still a Good Fri

Despite the bad news I just got, this is just a reminder that no matter how much we plan, we can't do it w/o God. This is still a good Fri b/c God is @ work in Acapulco & Honduras as well as in Luke's life. Below is the latest.

Luke began to have some pain on his left side on Tuesday, and after a CT Scan, the doctors think that he either has a small blood clot in his lung or some pleurisy. There is not really anything that they can do for it, other than the blood thinner and antibiotics he has already been on so they could monitor him more closely, he was moved from Rehab again back to ICU.

Good Fri

Today is a great day b/c two teams are preparing to go to Acapulco and Honduras this wknd. The prior is to help out with an orphanage and the latter is to help the poor. We already have a small team in Asia. There will be more going to Mexico, Africa, & Turkey later.

Non Believing Friends

One of the things I've slacked off lately is forming new friendships w/ NBFs. My excuse is that I am involved w/ so much @ church. How can I be salt and light w/o building relationships w/ those who do not know Christ? It is very easy for us just to hang w/ our Christian friends b/c we do not want to be challenged. One thing I admire about my pastor is that he constantly challenges us to form relationships with NBFs b/c he does it himself like being involved in the local little league and going to the same restaurant and getting to know the workers there. Anyway, I started attending this spin class 3x a week and am getting to know some people. It's so good to form new friendships whether the person is NBF or not. So if you don't have any NBFs, then it's time to start looking to make new friends like finding a new hairstylist, a new laundry place, a club of your interest, and go consistently so that you can build relationships with them. Otherwise, can you be salt and light just doing "church" things and hanging out w/ your Christian friends?
